14th «Jazz Globus»

Winter week in Jerusalem

The fourteenth international Jazz Globus Festival will take place in Jerusalem, from November 21 to 29. The festival will feature 50 musicians, including representatives of the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, as well as the best Israeli musicians.

In 2017 we celebrate a centenary of the birth of the greatest jazz musicians of all time Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. The immortal themes of theirs will be heard in most festival programs.

The festival is traditionally opened by the best young musicians of Israel. This year it is the quartet of the Jerusalem Conservatory «Sadna» led by maestro Tal Gamlieli.
The Trio «Shalosh», which in recent years successfully appeared on prestigious scenes in Europe and America, will play along with the saxophonist Martin Seiler, who is known on the New York jazz scene; this is his debut in Israel.
Also for the first time in Israel a brilliant pianist from Japan Haruka Yabuno. She will appear on stage in the ensemble with her friends, fellow students at Berkeley American Jazz School, the Israelis Ehud Ettun and Nathan Blankett.

Slava Ganelin, a pianist, a composer, one of the world’s leading musicians in the field of modern jazz, is the musical director of the festival, from the day of its foundation. He will appear twice – with a solo concert, and with the «Alliance–2017» ensemble, in free improvisation genre.

In the new programs of the quartets of Lenny Sendersky and Roy Mor, original compositions are combined with jazz classics.
The ensemble of Adam Cohen will present its first CD, «Zorem 443».
The classical concert this year is dedicated to the music of a unique pianist and composer Nikolai Kapustin, who celebrates this month his 80-year birthday.
A new project by Valery Korotkov, «Blast!», combines various directions of modern music. In addition to traditional jazz instruments and vocals, the ensemble uses rap and electronics.

A group of the pianist Yakov Muravin, «Jazz Insertion», will perform a program of funk music. «Tango Fusion» quartet will present different musical views on the most popular dance in the world, and the ensemble «Balkan-Knaan» will perform in progressive folk music style.

For the first time, one of the concerts of the festival will take place not in the “Harmony” hall, but in the church on Mount Zion, near the Old Town. Famous bayanist and composer Boris Malkovsky will appear in a new role of an organist. The program includes Bach’s music, Malkovsky’s improvisation on Bach’s themes, the composition by Yosef Bardanashvili, written specifically for this concert, and compositions by Thelonious Monk, adopted by Malkovsky for a great church organ.

«Harmony» hall will welcome the singers Irina Rosenfeld, formerly a star of Ukrainian pop music, now one of the stars of Israeli jazz, and the debutante of the festival, the brilliant Dasha Efremenko, who will perform in the ensemble with the leading figures of Israeli jazz: Avi Adrian, Boris Gammer, Eli Magen and Roni Golan.
The festival is the result of a collaboration between the Absorption Authority of the Jerusalem Municipality and the Center for Absorption of Immigrant Artists and Returning Residents of the Ministry of Immigration and Absorption.

During the festival days, in Harmony Cultural Center, an exhibition of paintings and photographs “In the Rhythm of Jazz” will take place. It will show works by 20 well known Israeli artists. Some of them created portraits of jazzmen and compositions with musical instruments, others sought to convey in the abstract works the tempo and rhythm, as well as the free movement of jazz improvisation.
